WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US Internal Revenue Service (IRS) needs to implement more robust security controls or taxpayer information will continue to be susceptible to misuse, the US Government Accountability Office (GAO) said in a press release.
“Until IRS takes additional steps to address unresolved and newly identified control deficiencies… taxpayer data will remain unnecessarily vulnerable to inappropriate and undetected use, modification, or disclosure,” the release, issued on Thursday, said.
The IRS could address these control weaknesses by implementing more effective information security programs and updating policies, evaluation processes and remedial action procedures.
The GAO is an independent, nonpartisan agency that works for US Congress to investigate and assess how the US federal government spends taxpayer dollars.
