WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US Army will send an additional multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) battalion to South Korea on a nine-month rotation, the US Defense Department said in a statement.
“This battalion will arrive fully manned, trained, equipped and will arrive at the highest level of readiness,” the statement, issued on Friday, said.
The 400 soldiers of the battalion will be on a nine-month rotation and will bring the total number of MLRS battalions in South Korea to three, according to the Defense Department.
The United States has about 28,500 soldiers stationed in South Korea, and has been militarily present in the country for nearly 60 years since the end of the Korean War.
The border seprating South Korea and North Korea is one of the most heavily militarized zones in the world.
