MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Armed extremists have executed over 25 servicemen, including officers, in the Yemeni city of al-Houta, located in the country's southern Lahij province, a source in Yemen's security services has told Sputnik.
"The militants locked up over 25 servicemen from the general and special security forces in one of the buildings in the city of al-Houta and then brutally executed them," the source said on Friday.
Power in Yemen is currently in the hands of the Ansar Allah Houthi rebel group. In late January, Yemeni President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi and the country's government resigned after Houthi rebels captured the presidential palace and government buildings.
The Houthis, the main opposition force in Yemen, started staging massive protests against tribal injustice last year, demanding the resignation of the president and several officials.
Apart from the Houthis, Yemeni government forces are battling against al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) extremists, who have been active in the south of the country.
