Sanctions vs. Profit: UK Gov't to Justify Arms Exports to Russia
MOSCOW (Sputnik), Daria Chernyshova — An Italian member of the European Parliament has urged the European Union to lift its anti-Russia sanctions as soon as possible citing the damage they do to the Russian and EU economies and them not contributing to peace in Ukraine.

“I believe that the EU should immediately withdraw any sanction against Russia,” Matteo Salvini told Sputnik Monday.

Last week, the European Council agreed that economic sanctions against Russia will remain in place and will be linked to the implementation of the Minsk agreements. The EU reserved the right to take further measures if necessary.

Salvini, who is the leader of the Lega Nord party, said that EU sanctions, as well as Russia’s trade restrictions introduced in response, “are seriously damaging both European and Russian economy, without bringing any benefit to the peace process in Ukraine and in Crimea.”

European countries appear divided on the need to continue the sanctions policy toward Moscow, with Italy, Austria, Spain, Greece, Cyprus, Hungary and Slovakia mainly calling for the withdrawal of the sanctions.

Salvini said that for the southern countries of Europe, such as Italy, “with a long history of trade and friendship with Russia, further sanctions would mean another major loss in both economic and political terms.”

Since the Ukrainian conflict escalated in April 2014, the European Union, the United States and their allies have imposed a number of economic sanctions against Moscow, blaming it for interfering in Ukraine’s internal affairs.

Moscow has repeatedly denied its involvement in the Ukrainian conflict, adding that Western sanctions run counter to the principles of international law.
