UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) – The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) is monitoring the situation in Idlib, Syria, amid reports of the use of chlorine gas in the region, OPCW Director General Ahmet Uzumcu said Wednesday in a statement.
On March 6, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution stating that those using toxic chemicals as weapons in Syria must be held accountable.
At the end of October 2014, the OPCW reported that nearly 98 percent of chemical weapons removed from Syria had been destroyed.
"We have been monitoring the recent reports suggesting that toxic chemicals may have been used as weapons in the Idlib province of the Syrian Arab Republic. This matter is of serious concern," Uzumcu said in a statement published on OPCW's website on Wednesday.
Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011. The country's government is fighting against several opposition and militant groups, including the Nusra Front and the Islamic State.
