Western media’s “disinformation” on Russia’s military activities is part of a plan to justify NATO states' increased military spending, Russian Senator Konstantin Kosachev said Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — NATO has increased its presence near Russian borders over the past year, as relations between the alliance and Moscow have deteriorated in light of the Ukraine crisis.

Last month, NATO announced that six new command posts would be created in NATO states close to Russia, and its Rapid Response Force would be more than doubled to include some 30,000 military personnel.

"Foreign media are fanning the flames around the drills and flights of Russian aircraft, presenting them as something unprecedented, which poses a threat to nearly the entire world,” Kosachev wrote in his blog.

Meanwhile, NATO claims its own activities are emergency responses to a “rapidly increasing” number of Russian military exercises, according to the politician.

"But this kind of misinformation serves one main cause – to make their own people scared of Russia, to make it easier to push for unpopular decisions, such as increased military spending and the allocation of additional US troops to Europe,” the Russian senator wrote.
