MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Head of Crimea Sergei Aksenov has commented on the impact of Western sanctions on Russia's newest region on the Black Sea, Crimea's economic potential, the human rights situation and the deployment of nuclear weapons, in an exclusive interview with Sputnik.
The region broke away from Ukraine in March 2014 and re-joined Russia in a referendum that showed over 96 percent of its population was in favor of the reunion.
In an interview with Sputnik, Aksenov spoke his mind on the probability of a second referendum in the region, as some Western politicians have suggested.
He also explained how Western sanctions – mostly travel restrictions – have weighed down on the republic, and what economic incentives the region promised to international investors.
The Crimean head raised the issue of nuclear weapons in the republic.
