MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Labour Party has opened up a four-point lead over the Conservative Party less than six weeks before the UK general election, according to a new YouGov opinion poll for the Sunday Times.
The Labour party received 36 percent of votes in support, while the Conservatives got 32 percent after the Thursday TV debate between Labour’s leader Ed Miliband and Conservatives’ leader, British Prime Minister David Cameron.
Many previous opinion polls, including the ICM/Telegraph Wisdom Index poll, have seen the parties neck-and-neck.
The UK general election is scheduled for May 7, 2015. British citizens will elect representatives to sit in the House of Commons, the country's lower house of parliament, for the next five years.
The Labour and the Conservative parties are the two major rivals in the upcoming election.
The “short” general election campaign in the United Kingdom will officially begin on Monday, after the dissolution of the current parliament.
