“All of our officer-involved shootings need to be investigated by an outside agency," said Utah Fraternal Order of Police Spokesperson Ian Adams, who pushed for the bill.
"They (Police Officers) made contact with the male driver, and at some point, either they got him out of the car or he got out of the car, and he produced a firearm,” said Salt Lake City Police Sgt. Robyn Heiden about the case. “At least one of the officers shot the male."
The bill would give an outside agency the authority to determine if a shooting was justified in accordance with department policy and standards, according to Good 4 Utah.
Adams said the district attorney or county attorney would work with chiefs of different police departments involved in a shooting case to determine which agency will lead the investigation.
While most departments use outside agencies to investigate officer-involved shooting cases, the new law mandates the practice state-wide.
