MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Houthi militants in Yemen are required to hand in their weapons and abandon their control of government offices for dialogue to commence to stop the conflict in the war-torn country, Gulf Cooperation Council Secretary General Abdullatif Zayani said Sunday.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the summit of Arab leaders in Egypt, Zayani underlined the need for "a safe environment to be provided so that the legitimate authorities may carry out their constitutional duties," as cited by Bahraini news outlet the Al Wasat.
Shiite Houthis, the main opposition force in Yemen, recently took over the country's capital Sanaa, forced the elected president to flee the country, and continued to make a rapid advance in other cities.
On Wednesday night, Saudi Arabia-led coalition launched airstrikes against Houthi positions in the country's capital Sanaa following the Yemeni president's request.
