The incident occurred Monday morning after a vehicle tried to ram the gate of the facility. According to NBC News, a security guard got into an altercation with two men who were trying to enter the facility disguised as women. Police fired at the SUV, which was reportedly a stolen Ford Escape.
Speaking with ABC, US officials confirmed that one of the assailants was killed while the other was "severely injured." An officer was also injured.
A Fort Meade spokeswoman, Mary Doyle, said two people are being treated for injuries.
Photos from local news outlets show what appears to be a dead body covered with a white sheet next to the damaged vehicle. According to NBC News, both a gun and drugs were found in the SUV.

According to a statement released by the FBI, the incident does not appear to be related to terrorism. The FBI is investigating alongside the NSA, and is working with the US Attorney's Office in Maryland to "determine if federal charges are warranted."

As a United States Army installation, Fort Meade is home to roughly 11,000 military personnel and nearly 29,000 civilian employees, according to the installation's website. Located near Baltimore, the site also houses US Cyber Command, Defense Courier Service, and the Defense Information Systems Agency.
