SANAA (Sputnik) — Yemeni government forces control a large part of Yemen’s Aden airport, but fighting against Houthi militants continues, a coalition force representative, Ahmad Maysari, told Sputnik Tuesday.

“They [the Houthis] have two tanks and armored personnel carries at the far end of the airport, but the airport’s territory is under our control. However, we cannot say it is under our full control,” Maysari said.

Yemeni Houthis, a religious group and the main opposition force in Yemen, recently took over the country's capital Sanaa, forced the elected president to flee the country, and made rapid advances into other cities.

Last week, the Saudi Arabia-led coalition began conducting airstrikes on Houthi positions in Yemen on the request of ousted Yemeni President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi.

On Sunday, the Saudi-led coalition attacked the Aden airport, which was under control of the special forces, the commander of which was blamed for cooperating with the Houthis.

The main goal of the military operation is to defeat the Houthis, supporters of ex-Yemeni president Ali Abdullah Saleh, and return to power the government of current president Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi.
