US, EU Intervene in Ukraine to Pursue Own Interests – Greek Lawmaker

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The United States and the European Union (EU) proceeded with aggressive intervention in Ukraine to pursue the interests of the business groups which they represent, the Member of the European Parliament for the Communist Party of Greece told Sputnik Tuesday.

"The US, the EU and NATO are the ones who proceeded with an imperialist intervention in Ukraine in the context of their competition with Russia," Sotirios Zarianopoulos said.

"The aggressive intervention in Ukraine — where they [the United States, the European Union and NATO] want to enhance the interests of the big business groups which they represent, particularly in the field of energy production and transport, within their competition with Russia — takes place on the basis of this policy," he added.

The United States, the European Union and some other Western countries have so far imposed several rounds of economic sanctions on Russia over its alleged meddling in Ukraine's internal affairs and participation in the armed conflict in the southeast of the country, a claim that Moscow has repeatedly denied.

According to Zarianopoulos, the anti-Russian sanctions have nothing to do with the interests of people in Ukraine's southeastern regions, but only reflect their own interests "and should be abolished immediately."
