WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US Department of State should stop the negotiations on the political framework of a comprehensive Iran nuclear deal and should adhere to a position of strength, US Senator Tom Cotton said in a statement.
“The best solution is walk away from the nuclear negotiations now and return to a position of strength,” Cotton said on Tuesday. “The decision to extend the nuclear negotiations in the face of Iranian intransigence and duplicity proves once again that Iran is calling the shots.”
The deadline for agreement on the political framework was set previously for midnight on Tuesday, March 31.
Cotton argued that the US President Barack Obama administration will make “dangerous concessions” in the next 24 hours in the negotiations with Tehran.
Cotton is the author of a controversial March 9 letter co-signed with US Senate Republicans and sent to high-ranking Iranian officials, saying that a nuclear agreement with Iran could collapse upon Obama’s departure from office in 2017 and if the Congress does not ratify the agreement.
The White House said the letter was trying to derail critical international negotiations.
Iran and the P5+1 group of countries, comprising Russia, China, the United States, France and the United Kingdom plus Germany, have been trying since November 2013 to reach an agreement guaranteeing a peaceful nature of Tehran's nuclear program.
