The Houthis, a Shiite militant group, held months of peaceful rallies protesting discrimination by the government before taking a forceful approach in which Yemen's leadership resigned in January.

Ousted Yemeni President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi disavowed his resignation in February, attempting to reclaim control. Late March he fled the country, called on Saudi Arabia to begin airstrikes against the Houthis and currently Hadi is reported to be in Saudi capital Riyadh.
