WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — US State Secretary John Kerry will continue to negotiate with Iran until Thursday, April 2, in an attepmt to reach a political agreement on Tehran's nuclear program, US Department of State spokesperson Marie Harf said via Twitter on Wednesday.
“Cont[inue] to make progress; have not reached a pol[itical] understanding. John will remain in Lausanne until at least Thursday AM to cont[inue] negotiations,” Harf said in the tweet.
Earlier on Wednesday, the White House said that the United States was ready to walk away from the talks if Iran stalls on its commitments to reach a deal.
Earnest explained that reaching an agreement with Iran would require Tehran to make “some serious” commitments, but that those have yet to be made.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel, however, said earlier on Wednesday that significant progress has been made toward reaching a deal with Iran.
Meanwhile, the head of the Iranian Atomic Energy Organization Ali Akbar Salehi stated that the talks were “moving forward.”
Tuesday, March 31 was the deadline for the negotiators to hammer out an agreement, but the talks continued into the night and resumed on Wednesday.
Iran and the international mediators have been in talks since November 2013 trying to broker the agreement on Tehran’s nuclear program. The new self-imposed deadline for the final deal is now set for July 1, 2015.
