A victory by the Labour party, led by Ed Miliband, in the 2015 UK general election means more spending, more borrowing and higher taxes, a Conservative Party spokesman told Sputnik Thursday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik), Yulia Shamporova – The Conservative Party spokesman said that the 2015 general elections in Britain were the most important in a generation.

“There’s a clear choice: between a competent Conservative team with a long-term economic plan, securing a better future for British people and their families. Or a weak Ed Miliband in Downing Street, propped up by the SNP [Scottish National Party], meaning more spending, more borrowing and higher taxes – and a return to economic crisis,” the spokesman said.

Monday marked the start of the election season in Britain, and campaign parties were formally launched.

The UK general election is scheduled for May 7, 2015. British citizens will elect representatives to sit in the House of Commons, the country's lower house of parliament, for five-year terms.

The Labour and Conservative parties are major rivals in the upcoming election, with a YouGov Sunday poll revealing that 36 percent of those voters polled backing Labour and 32 percent of the poll respondents supporting the Conservative Tories.
