While existing technology allows for a patient to be kept alive by the use of a large external device when waiting for a transplant organ, the new device will provide “a happy life with a new heart.”

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The development of an artificial heart may begin in Russia in 2015, the head of development and production of medical equipment at the United Instrument Manufacturing Corporation (UIMC) said Thursday.

“Together with MAI [Moscow Aviation Institute] we are trying to launch a project to create an artificial heart,” Alexander Kulish told RIA Novosti.

The companies intend to begin work on the project by the end of the year, Kulish said, adding, however, that advances in biotechnology could allow scientists to grow living hearts within the next few years, making it difficult to determine how relevant an artificial heart would be by the time the technology is perfected.

“In terms of technology development it will pay off either way,” he said.

Kulish noted that similar projects have been successfully concluded in Russia.
