A political cartoonist was charged with nine counts of sedition for criticizing Malaysia's judicial system over the jailing of an opposition leader in a series of tweets, posted in February.
The lawyer for Zulkifli Anwar Ulhaque, better known as Zunar, called the charges excessive, saying nine counts was a record for a single appearance in court.
Zunar could spend more than 40 years in prison if found guilty.
