The emails were either written or forwarded among Captain Rick Henke, Sergeant William Mudd and municipal court clerk Mary Ann Twitty.
They feature racist imagery and jokes targeting African-Americans, Muslims, and President Obama, as well as sexist or misogynistic humor.
Twitty was the first Ferguson official to lose her job after the emails were referenced in the Justice Department report released March 4. Soon after, Henke and Mudd resigned as a result of the emails. The report's wider conclusions also led to a “mutual separation agreement” for city manager John Shaw for his role in the systematic use of traffic violations to raise city revenue.

From an email of "insensitive one-liners" sent by Twitty to Henke and Mudd, Dec. 7, 2011:
"I was devastated to find out my wife was having an affair…but, by turning to religion, I was soon able to come to terms with the whole thing. I've converted to Islam and we're stoning her in the morning"
"The Red Cross just knocked on my door and asked if we could contribute to the flooding in Pakistan. I said we'd love to but our garden hose only reaches to the driveway."
June 7, 2011 email from Mudd to Twitty:
"Last week I went to sign up my dogs for welfare. At first the lady said "Dogs are not eligible to draw welfare." So I explained to her that my dogs are mixed in color, unemployed, lazy, can't speak English and have no friggin clue who their Daddies are….My dogs get their first checks Friday"
Nov. 14, 2008 from Henke:
"[W]e shouldn't worry about [Obama] being president very long because what black man holds a steady job for four years."
May 1, 2011 email From Mudd to Twitty under the subject heading "Sounds like a plan!!":
"An African American woman in New Orleans was admitted into the hospital for a pregnancy termination. Two weeks later she received a check for $5,000. She phoned the hospital to ask who it was from. The hospital said, 'Crimestoppers'."
