“According to a preliminary evaluation, total area of pollution is no bigger than 100 square meters [1076 square feet] and the spill [resulted in the release of] about 200 liters of oil,” a spokesperson for RN-Sakhalinmorneftegaz told RIA Novosti, adding that the spill took place on Friday.
The spokesperson said that RN-Sakhalinmorneftegaz has taken all necessary steps to minimize the negative impact of the spill on the environment and that cleanup will continue until all spilled oil is removed from the area.
The organization said that at least a few metric tons of oil had been spilled over an area of several thousands square meters and that oil continued to flow down an unnamed local stream.
Environmentalists have sent information about the spill to the Russian Emergencies Ministry and the Federal Service for the Oversight of Natural Resources.
