MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The US-based eBay Inc. has become the first American internet company to declare its willingness to transfer the personal data of its Russian customers to servers located in Russia, the Kommersant daily reports.
"eBay is working on the transfer of the information from Switzerland to Russia. The [new Russian] law [on the storage of personal data] comes into force on September 1 [2015], but the company will finish this work earlier," an anonymous source was quoted as saying by the Russian newspaper on Tuesday.
The source also said that the online PayPal payment system, which is currently owned by eBay, will also move Russian customers' data to Russia before September.
Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law obliging foreign online companies to store Russian users' personal data only in Russia in July, 2014.
Lawmakers were asked to delay the regulation's entry into force, with the Foreign Investment Advisory Council (FIAC) in particular citing a short amount of time to adjust in-house networks to the provisions of the law.
However, instead of postponing it, the legislators advanced the data storage bill's entry into force from September 1, 2016 to September 1, 2015. The decision to move up the bill's date by a year followed consultations with representatives from the Internet industry.
