A group of Sunni rebels from Pakistan has managed to infiltrate into Iran, killing at least eight Iranian border guards during an armed clash, media reports said.
"Armed terrorists entered Iran from Pakistan and clashed with border guards, killing eight soldiers before fleeing back to Pakistan," Ali Asghar Mirshekari, deputy governor of Sistan-Baluchistan province, was quoted by the AFP news agency as saying.
The province, located in southeastern Iran, has a large Sunni community and repeated attacks by militants on the security forces of mainly Shiite Iran are not uncommon in the province.
