After closing over 50 public schools in Chicago, the mayor did not win 50% of the vote in February’s election leading to a runoff election for the first time in the city’s history. Upset over the closures, The Chicago Teacher’s Union provided overwhelming support to Garcia.
Emanuel spent 20 million dollars on his campaign, which many have noted seemed to be aimed less at what changes he offered for the city- Chicago has lead the nation in homicides throughout mayoral career — and more focused on painting Garcia as incompetent and naive, incapable of handling the city’s financial problems.
Fortunately for Emanuel, his campaign worked, and around 8:15 pm on Tuesday evening, Garcia called the mayor and conceded.
