The Toronto Symphony Orchestra has cancelled two upcoming performances by Ukrainian-born pianist Valentina Lisitsa, citing concerns over her outspoken political views.

Lisitsa, who was born in Kiev, was scheduled to play Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 with the TSO at Roy Thomson Hall on April 8 and 9.

On Monday she wrote a lengthy post on her Facebook page telling her fans about her political view on the Ukrainian conflict. Immedeately after that her performance was cancelled.

“Someone in the orchestra’s top management,” she wrote in a 1,000-word post, “likely after the pressure from a small but aggressive lobby claiming to represent the Ukrainian community, has made a decision that I should not be allowed to play.”

It seems like nowadays even classical music cannot stay away from politics…
