SANAA (Sputnik) — The tribes gained control of the military base after several hours of armed confrontation with soldiers based there.
The rebels set the base, as well as ammunition stored there, on fire so that the weapons would not end up in the hands of Houthi rebels.
Yemen is suffering from a military confrontation between government forces and Houthi rebels that recently took the capital Sanaa and several other cities under control. The Houthis are also fighting local tribes and al-Qaeda militants, which recently seized the southeastern port city of Mukalla.
In March, a coalition headed by Saudi Arabia launched a military operation against Houthi rebel positions in Yemen, at the request of President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi.
A total of 643 people have been killed and 2,226 injured since the Yemen conflict escalated on March 19, according to the WHO.
