KHARTOUM (Sputnik) — Sudan is participating in the airstrikes being conducted by the Saudi-led coalition against the Houthi rebels, who recently made a rapid advance in Yemen and seized the country’s capital Sanaa.
However, if the conflict intensifies and there is need for ground troops in Yemen, Sudan will send its ground forces to the war-torn Yemen, Sudanese Information Minister Ahmed Bilal Osman said.
“Our Armed Forces are ready, Sudan is committed to sending a land force brigade to Yemen, as the Sudanese President promised earlier.”
In late March, Saudi Arabian military spokesman said that its forces and those of its allies were ready to launch ground operations inside Yemen if needed.
The main goal of the military operation is to defeat the Houthis, supporters of ex-Yemeni president Ali Abdullah Saleh, and return the government of current president Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi to power.
