"As a member of the UN Security Council and NATO, we have treaty commitments and obligations that we must meet… We are also fully committed to playing a full role in NATO," Mike Hookem told Sputnik.
Hookem stressed that UKIP fully supported spending 2 percent of the country's gross domestic product on defense, as stipulated in NATO's guidelines. He added that the British military really needed that money as it is currently "underfunded and overstretched."
The UKIP spokesman did not elaborate on where the funds would come from, though the party's economic spokesman suggested foreign aid and public funding for Scotland as some of the programs on the chopping block.
Hookem assured Sputnik that cuts to foreign assistance were unlikely to have a negative impact on Britain's image abroad or its national security. Neither will it upset UK voters, he said, as UKIP supporters would most likely "appreciate our honesty in such matters."
The UK general election is scheduled for May 7, 2015. British voters will elect representatives to sit in the House of Commons, the country's lower house of parliament, for the next five years.
