MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The mortar fire hit an area south of Sheikh Zuweid, while a missile hit a house in another village in North Sinai, the Iranian Press TV news channel reported Thursday citing unnamed military officials.

Last week, 15 soldiers and two civilians were reportedly killed after gunmen attacked security checkpoints around Sheikh Zuweid
Cairo has been carrying out operations against the militants based on the Sinai Peninsula since August 2012.
The region saw an increase in attacks on government forces since the overthrow of Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013.
In November 2014, the militant group, known as the Province of Sinai, pledged allegiance to the Islamic State jihadist group that is operating in Syria and Iraq.
