A court in Venice will consider a request from Turkey to extradite a man who was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of being connected to the ultra-leftist group DHKP-C, blamed for two recent deadly shootouts in Istanbul.
The man’s lawyer was quoted as saying he is confident the request would be rejected by the Venice appeals court as the man is recognized as a political refugee in Austria, where he lives.
The Turkish authorities have arrested over 30 suspected members of the DHKP-C organization since the deadly hostage standoff between the radical group and security forces left a top Istanbul prosecutor dead last Tuesday.
