A joint operation of an international cybercrime fighters' team, involving the US FBI, Europol's European Cybercrime Center, and the private firms Kaspersky Lab, Shadowserver, and McAfee, have resulted in the shutdown of the notorious Beebone botnet, used for malware distribution.
Beebone has infected at least 12,000 computers, most of them located in the United States. The malicious program was updating itself about 19 times a day; Beebone also relied on two software programs which re-downloaded each other, complicating the elimination of the botnet. Beebone's scheme was rather simple but at the same time it was "state-of-the-art," cyber security experts noted.

The elimination of the Beebone botnet is the first step in fighting cybercrimes by the Joint Cybercrime Action Taskforce, an international organization established by the FBI, Britain's National Crime Agency and Europol in September 2014, in order to deal with growing cyber threats.
