In total, 15 cars jumped the tracks and ammonium nitrate was spilled due to the accident that happened shortly after 8:30 p.m. in Trenton, SC, local media reported.
The train derailed after hitting a tree that had fallen on the tracks, an eyewitness said.
Officials could not immediately confirm the cause of derailment or how many cars the train had all together.
Thirty people were evacuated as a precaution but by early Saturday morning all residents were allowed to return home.
Emergency officials said it could take well into the day to clean up the spill.
