WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Earlier on Saturday, US media reported citing the Capitol police that several shots have been fired on the west front of the Capitol building and that the gunman has been "neutralized." The shooting was later confirmed to be a suicide attempt.
"There was a suicide that took place, and they're [the police] working on the suspicious package right now. The person [who has been shooting has] deceased," Lt. Sean Conboy said adding that the shooting took place within the Capitol grounds.
The Capitol building and several streets in the area were closed down for about an hour as police were examining a suspicious package that the gunman allegedly left on the lower west terrace of Capitol and searching for the shooter's car.
