MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Republican US Senator Marco Rubio is expected to announce April 13 that he will run for US president in the 2016 election.
In late March he mentioned an event on April 13 to be held on the campus of Miami Dade College in Miami, Florida, without giving any details.
If Rubio confirms his nomination, he will compete with fellow Republicans, including former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, Kentucky Senator Rand Paul and Texas Senator Ted Cruz.
According to Rubio's official website, a "big announcement" is expected at 6 p.m. EST (22:00 GMT).
Rubio is an advocate of conservative views on financial and social issues, supporting initiatives to balance the federal budget, opposing limits on US defense spending and a staunch opponent of same-sex marriage.
On Sunday, Democratic Party candidate Hillary Clinton announced online the launch of her presidential campaign for the 2016 election.
