Canada Plans to Send Soldiers to Ukraine – Canadian Media
MOSCOW (Sputnik) Canada’s Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Defense Minister Jason Kenney will announce on Tuesday the deployment of over 100 troops to Ukraine as part of a training mission, according to national media.

Most of the contingent, to be sent in mid-May, will be housed at Western Ukraine’s city of Yavoriv, the Globe and Mail reported.

Canadians will reportedly provide Kiev troops with expertise in countering explosives, and give guidance on logistics and military policing. How long Canada’s soldiers will remain in the war-torn country was not specified.

In late 2014, Canada's former defense minister, Rob Nicholson, suggested expanding cooperation with Kiev and sending Canadian military police officers to train Ukrainian colleagues. The initiative was suspended in February amid escalating violence in eastern Ukraine.

The United States and the United Kingdom are providing Kiev forces with military training, in addition to other non-lethal aid. The two countries reportedly sent military instructors to Ukraine in March for training sessions.

News of foreign training missions in Ukraine comes amid increasingly frustrating attempts to maintain the fragile ceasefire in the country between Kiev and pro-independence forces of the country's southeast.

The conflict, started in April 2014, has killed over 6,000 people, according to UN estimates.
