MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russia will not isolate itself from other countries, despite Western attempts to isolate it, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said Thursday.

"Despite some Western leaders’ efforts to isolate Russia, punish Russia for an independent policy and protection of compatriots, we are not going to close. Russia is ready for broad cooperation with partners around the world — in Europe, Asia, Africa, the Americas, " the minister said at an international security conference in Moscow.

Certain Western powers are trying to draw Asian and Latin American nations into an anti-Russia campaign to isolate Moscow, Sergei Shoigu said.

"There are attempts to engage Asian and Latin American countries into an anti-Russia campaign. Certain Western nations have declared international isolation of our country as the goal," the minister said.

He continued that many European media are churning false ideas on the need to deter alleged Russian aggression.

Russia has been targeted with economic sanctions by the United States, the European Union and a number of their allies over what the West says was the "annexation" of Crimea and Moscow's alleged role in the ongoing crisis in eastern Ukraine.
