Kiev forces and the militias of Donetsk and Lugansk people's republics have been clashing since April 2014 once Kiev launched a military operation in Ukraine's southeast over a year ago.
According to UN estimates, more than 6,000 people have been killed and over a million displaced since the armed confrontation began.
Attempts to establish a ceasefire have been made, but only the peace deal reached in mid-February in Minsk, Belarus, brought certain results, with the warring parties agreeing to withdraw heavy equipment from the line of contact, exchange prisoners and maintain ceasefire. The sides of the conflict, however, have been reporting truce violations.
