The man, Abdirahman Sheik Mohamud, allegedly trained with the terrorist group in Syria, and was arrested after returning to the US on suspicion of plotting terror attacks.
The 23-year-old faces one count of attempting to provide and providing material support to terrorists, one count of attempting to provide and providing material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization, and one count of making false statements to the FBI.
"This case is unusual in that he actually went to Syria and returned to conduct attacks," the DoJ said, according to local WBNS. "Most of these 'aspiring jihadists' don't leave the country."
