Nikolic's press office said that one of the engines on the presidential Falcon jet suffered "technical problems" during the flight and forced them to return.
Presidnet Nikolic, who was to meet with Roman Catholic Pope Francis, spoke with Serbian Patriarch Irinej ahead of the trip, announcing that he would inform the Pontiff of "some notions shared by the Serbian Orthodox Church that are of mutual interest."
Presidential advisor Stanislava Pak told Tanjug news agency that the visit was delayed until further notice, adding that a new visit was expected to be scheduled shortly.
