"The Iraqi security forces have managed to eliminate Izzat Ibrahim Douri during an operation in the Himrin area," Saladin Province Governor Ahmed Jubouri told local Alsumaria television.
The channel showed pictures of the body of a red-bearded man believed to be Douri. Local police said that were conducting DNA tests to identify the body.

Prior to the overthrow of Hussein Gen. Douri was Vice Chairman of the Iraqi Revolutionary Command Council, the country's ultimate decision-making body at the time.
After Hussein was executed in December 2006, Douri succeeded him as the new leader of the banned Baath Party.
Douri had also been a commander of an insurgency group fighting the new Iraqi government since late 2006.
