US civil rights organizations claimed victory in a court settlement that will expand early voting opportunities in the US state of Ohio for the 2016 United States presidential election, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) said in a press release.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The civil rights groups successfully argued that preventing Ohio voters from registering and voting on the same day in advance of the 2016 presidential election would negatively affect low-income and black voters, the release explained.

“The Ohio NAACP, ACLU and other civil rights organizations settled with the Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted, in a deal that would expand early voting opportunities,” the release said on Monday.

Civil rights groups have for years complained that Ohio electoral laws have disenfranchised minority voters in elections at all levels, according to the NAACP.
