Egyptian Ex-President Morsi Facing Possible Death Penalty in First Verdict
CAIRO (Sputnik) – A criminal court in Cairo has sentenced Egyptian ex-President Mohamed Morsi and his closest allies to 20 years in prison for their participation in the deaths of demonstrators.

Morsi and 14 of his closest allies were incriminated in the instigation of premeditated murder and physical violence that led to the deaths of six demonstrators and the injuring of hundreds of others during uprisings in December 2012.

The former president is held at a high-security prison close to the coastal city of Alexandria. He was brought there after spending four months at an undisclosed facility.

Morsi was ousted as a result of the 2013 military coup that followed days of massive protests against the president and his Muslim Brotherhood party. The new government of former army chief and now President Abdul Fattah Sisi has banned the Brotherhood and arrested scores of the deposed leader's supporters.

In early April, an Egyptian court handed death sentences to Brotherhood's leader Mohammed Badie and 13 other members of the group for allegedly planning attacks against the state.
