"We need more information reflecting Russian point of view, not less," president of the Novae Terrae Foundation Luca Volonte told Sputnik, when asked about the ICM poll, which suggested that people in UK, France, Germany, Greece mistrust media coverage of the conflict in Ukraine.
He stressed that the European citizens call out for "balanced media coverage of the conflict in eastern Ukraine" as they feel resentment toward US media corporations.
Luca Volonte, who is also a former Chairman of the EPP Group in the Council of Europe, pointed out that the ICM poll confirmed his believes that EU citizens are "hungry" for alternative, accurate news coverage. "EU leaders should give credence to the public opinion in their states," he stressed.
The European leadership needs to give credence to the voices of EU citizens who are tired of the anti-Russia bias in the mainstream media, Luca Volonte said.
"People in Europe don't believe the western propaganda; their voices should be fully heard by the European leaders," the president of the Novae Terrae Foundation told Sputnik when asked about the ICM poll, which suggested that people in UK, France, Germany, Greece mistrust media coverage of Ukraine's crisis.
"Basic freedom of speech is not observed in the European media networks because they are politically biased," Luca Volonte stressed, adding that ICM poll confirmed his assumptions that the general EU public is "hungry" for an alternative, accurate coverage of the conflict in Ukraine.
The ICM survey was conducted from March 20 to April 9, 2015 among 4,001 people (1,001 in Greece and 1,000 in each of the other countries).
An average of 54 percent of respondents across these four EU countries said they had "not very much" or "none at all" when asked about their level of trust in mainstream mass media when it came to covering the Ukrainian crisis "accurately and fairly," according to the survey.
Over 6,000 people have been killed in clashes in southeastern Ukraine since the start of a conflict there in April 2014.
The United States and the European Union accuse Russia of "annexing" Crimea which rejoined Russia in March, 2014 following a referendum in which 96 percent of participants voted in favor of the move.
The West also claims, without providing any factual evidence, that Russia has interfered in the armed conflict in southeastern Ukraine, where Kiev launched a military operation against independence supporters in April, 2014.
