During a rally in New Delhi a farmer climbed a tree and hanged himself as leaders of the AAP, including its Coordinator and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, addressed the gathered farmers.
"The farmer would have been saved… We were insensitive to the situation. I really apologize for the person who was at the rally and lost his life," Gandhi said.
The parliamentarian said that the leaders of the party present at the rally should have foreseen the possible suicide. A series of self-murders has been taking place across the country recently in response to the land acquisition issue.
Indian Home Minister Rajnath Singh has ordered a probe into the incident, which will be headed by the Delhi police chief commissioner.
Earlier reports had mistakenly suggested that the farmer who committed suicide had done so by immolating himself and was declared dead on the way to a hospital.
Amendments to the bill were passed by the lower house of the country's parliament this March. Opponents of the legislation dubbed it "anti-farmer" because it granted the country's authorities greater powers to appropriate land for public works.
