STRASBOURG (Sputnik), Daria Chernyshova — Cyprus is hoping to deepen its long-term cooperation with Russia following a visit by the country's President Nicos Anastasiades to Moscow earlier this year, a Cypriot lawmaker told Sputnik Wednesday.
"Hopefully it will be long-term. This is what we hope, this is what we are asking for from our government," George Loukaides said.
The lawmaker added that there were "positive signs" that the Cypriot government wanted to further improve relations with Moscow.
"Part of this effort was the visit of President Anastasiades to Russia recently where we had some significant agreements between the two countries in the military level also. I hope that in other fields we should also have positive developments," Loukaides said.
In February, President Anastasiades and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin signed a program on cooperation between the two countries for 2015-2017.
