MOSCOW (Sputnik) – According to The Telegraph, Saudi Arabia's request for more weapons for its campaign in Yemen earlier in April resulted in a row in the government. Several ministers, including Business Secretary Vince Cable, confronted Defense Secretary Michael Fallon on the issue.
"[Cable] wanted to be sure that there was no risk that any use of force could spill over into harming civilians," a source close to the official said as quoted by the newspaper.
Yemen has been mired in turmoil for months, with Houthi rebels taking over large parts of the country and causing President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi and his government to resign. In March, a Saudi-led coalition launched a military operation against the rebels at Hadi's request.
The coalition announced cessation of its military operation on April 21. However, the Saudi airstrikes continued overnight, a local source told Sputnik.
According to UN estimates, over 1,000 people have been killed in Yemen since the start of the coalition airstrikes.
