LONDON (Sputnik) — Rallies, demonstrations and marches are currently being held in the United Kingdom to express solidarity with refugees who have recently died in the Mediterranean, and to condemn the inaction of EU authorities in solving the issue.
On Sunday, between 800-900 migrants died when their boat capsized in the Mediterranean while heading toward the European Union.
On Thursday, EU leaders convened an extraordinary summit in Brussels following the Sunday tragedy. The parties have pledged more financing for "migration" operations in the Mediterranean, in particular for the capture and destruction of vessels transporting illegal immigrants.
According to the charity, another 2,500 children could die this year, if the European Union fails to revive financing of larger search and rescue operations in the Mediterranean.
In another action, organized by Amnesty International, a scene with corpses in black sacks was reconstructed in the south coast of England. The organizers titled the action Don't Let Them Drown and stated that British government actions to resolve the crisis are unacceptable.
The Mediterranean Sea is one of the main routes for migrants trying to flee armed conflicts in North Africa and the Middle East. At least 3,500 people died crossing the sea in 2014, according to UN estimates.
