Governor Mark Dayton’s action will put an emergency operations plan in place, and calls for National Guard personnel to be on duty as needed. Dayton also says he will provide preventative medicine to anyone believed to have been in contact with an infected bird.
No human cases have yet been reported in Minnesota.
The virus has killed nearly 5% of the state’s turkey industry, and scientists have no explanation for its rapid spread. The Netherlands, UK, and Germany are also battling the epidemic after it originally emerged in Asia.
