Ukraine is continuing to persecute political opponents, although one of the goals of Maidan was to stop this practice, “Die Zeit” journalist Alice Botha wrote.
In her article, Botha commented on a series of high-profile murders in Ukraine — in particular of journalist Oles Buzina, who opposed the current government in Kiev, and former deputy of the Party of Regions Oleg Kalashnikov.
According to Botha, Kiev authorities also showed negligence with regard to other major events.
The journalist pointed out that the duty of a democratic state is to protect those who feel threatened. But the situation in Ukraine is the opposite, with radicals creating a hostile atmosphere across the country. Those who do not identify themselves with Maidan are considered betrayers, said political analyst Oleg Voloshin as cited by the journalist.
According to Botha, violence against political opponents was the basis of previous regimes in Ukraine. One of the Maidan goals was to eliminate such kind of political culture, but no positive results have been seen in this field so far.
