WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The victory against Nazism in the Second World War is a sacred event that is remembered in the United States and Russia despite the political disagreements the two nations might have, Russia’s Ambassador to the United States Sergey Kislyak stated at the “Spirit of Elbe” commemoration event at Arlington National Cemetery on Friday.
“I am very happy that our American friends are here with us today despite of the difficulties we might have in our bilateral relations,” Kislyak said. “The memory of the great victory is sacred.”
Kislyak noted that the republics of the Soviet Union made an enormous contribution toward the victory, but suffered great losses.
“We did it together, forged victory together with the allies, and today we remember both the Soviet and the American soldiers who fought together at the fronts,” Kislyak added.
On Friday, Russian and US delegations laid flowers at the “Spirit of the Elbe” memorial at Arlington National Cemetery. The memorial was opened in 1995 to mark the 50th anniversary of the historical linking between the Soviet and US armies at River Elbe.
